A Nostalgic Journey: Dave McCann's Unforgettable Role as CBS 'Runner' at BYU

On a memorable night in November 1989, anticipation coursed through me as I prepared for an exciting opportunity with CBS Sports. I had long aspired to be a play-by-play announcer, and the upcoming BYU-Air Force football game felt like a significant step toward that dream. As a sophomore studying broadcasting, I was assigned the role of "The Runner" for the event, a position I knew little about but was thrilled to undertake alongside broadcasting legends like Brent Musburger and Kenny Stabler.

Arriving early for the crew call, the game producer quickly tasked me with delivering a manila envelope containing crucial game notes and Stabler’s media credential to the former NFL star at his hotel. My heart raced as I approached the door of Stabler’s suite at the Provo Marriott, where I knocked nervously. After a tense wait, the door swung open to reveal Stabler, wrapped only in a towel, his hair tousled. “What’s up man?” he greeted me, his Southern drawl unmistakable. I delivered my message, and he thanked me before retreating inside.

With my first assignment completed, I returned to the stadium, eagerly anticipating my next encounter with Musburger. Growing up, I had admired his hosting on “The NFL Today” and was inspired by his broadcasting style. When he arrived at the booth, he greeted me warmly, asking for my name and marveling at the scenic view. Stabler soon joined us, and as a runner, I quickly found myself observing the dynamic between the seasoned professionals as they prepared for the game.

As the match unfolded, BYU’s Stacey Corley electrified the crowd with two kickoff returns for touchdowns, while quarterback Ty Detmer threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, leading BYU to a thrilling 44-35 victory over Air Force. Musburger's signature sign-off, “You have been watching college football on CBS!” marked the end of my unforgettable experience. Summoning my courage, I expressed my admiration and aspiration to meet him in New York someday. “You do that, young man!” he replied, a phrase I would carry with me.

Fast forward 37 years, and I reflect on that day with fondness, even as the image of Stabler in a towel lingers humorously in my mind. I have since had numerous broadcasting opportunities in that very stadium, and CBS's recent announcement to air BYU’s game at Colorado State in prime time this September is a significant milestone. This will mark the first time in BYU’s history that CBS has showcased the Cougars during prime time on a Saturday night, opening the door for future memorable moments for both the team and the next “Runner” in the booth.
