Alabama Crimson Tide Returns to College World Series After 24-Year Hiatus

The Alabama Crimson Tide is making a triumphant return to the College World Series for the first time since 1999. They secured their spot by defeating St. John's in back-to-back games during the Tuscaloosa Super Regional. The Tide dominated the Red Storm, winning the first game 8-0 on Saturday night and clinching the series with a 7-2 victory on Sunday, which extended into Monday morning due to weather delays.

Initially scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday, the game was postponed to 3 p.m. due to concerns about impending bad weather. Unfortunately, the rain and lightning arrived during the eighth inning, leading to a 5.5-hour delay. The game eventually resumed on Monday at 11 a.m. Alabama improved its record to 42-19, while St. John's fell to 36-26.

In a notable twist, Alabama was designated as the visiting team for this matchup, a situation that generally frustrates many baseball fans. Junior Zane Adams took the mound for the Tide, facing off against former Alabama player Evan Chaffee. Both pitchers started strong, with Adams striking out two batters in the first inning while Chaffee also had a quick inning with two strikeouts.

The scoring began in the third inning when Alabama managed to take the lead. Luke Vaughn hit a double and subsequently scored on Peyton Steele's single. The Tide extended their lead to 2-1 after a groundout by Brady Neal. St. John's answered back, narrowing the gap to 2-1, but Alabama responded with more runs in the fourth and seventh innings, including a grand slam by Jason Torres, which electrified the home crowd.

With a 7-2 lead, Alabama's Adams continued to pitch effectively until he was replaced by Matthew Heiberger after reaching 111 pitches. Heiberger secured the final outs, leading to a victory that propelled the Tide into the World Series. Alabama’s offense was highlighted by Torres, who finished with a double and four RBIs, while St. John's struggled at the plate, hitting just .145 across the two games.

The Crimson Tide will commence their World Series journey on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT against a rival they know well.
