Alexander Zverev Celebrates First Grand Slam Title as Chancellor Merz Commends His Achievement

In a thrilling conclusion to the French Open, Alexander Zverev secured his inaugural Grand Slam title with a hard-fought victory over Flavio Cobolli, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. This triumph marks a significant milestone for Zverev, who has long been seen as a potential champion and finally delivered on that promise on the prestigious Court Philippe Chatrier.

Following his victory, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took to social media platform X to offer his congratulations, stating, “What an extraordinary success! Heartfelt congratulations on the fantastic victory at the French Open and your first Grand Slam title, Alexander Zverev. This powerful performance thrills an entire nation.”

Zverev's win ended a three-decade drought for German men's tennis at the Grand Slam level, the last being Boris Becker’s triumph at the 1996 Australian Open. Previously, Zverev had experienced disappointment in three Grand Slam finals, falling short against Dominic Thiem, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner.

While Zverev has enjoyed a successful career, including an Olympic gold medal and multiple Masters 1000 titles, he has yet to capture the Davis Cup, often considered the sport's team championship. Germany's last Davis Cup victory was in 1993, led by Michael Stich. With his individual goals now achieved, Zverev may turn his attention to national team success, beginning with a crucial qualifying match against Croatia this September.
