Auburn Secures Commitment from Elite Defensive Back Chance Gilbert
Chance Gilbert, a highly regarded cornerback and safety from East Coweta in Sharpsburg, Georgia, has officially committed to Auburn University following his weekend visit to the campus. Gilbert's decision marks a significant victory for head coach Alex Golesh and his new coaching staff, who successfully outmaneuvered formidable competition from programs like Georgia and Clemson to secure the Rivals Industry's No. 8 cornerback and the 55th overall prospect in the 2027 recruitment class.
With Gilbert's commitment, Auburn's recruiting class now boasts 16 players, positioning them at No. 13 in the national rankings by Rivals. Gilbert expressed his enthusiasm for the Tigers, stating, "They just made me comfortable. Love their environment. Love what they did while I was there." He emphasized the welcoming atmosphere created by the coaching staff and noted his strong rapport with Golesh, describing him as a "great man, great guy" who made a lasting impression on both him and his family.
During his junior season, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Gilbert recorded impressive stats, including 53 tackles and three interceptions, while also showcasing his offensive skills with 16 receptions for 393 yards and five touchdowns. He even returned a kick for a score. Rivals Director of Scouting Charles Power praised Gilbert as a "versatile defensive back" with a blend of athleticism and ball skills, highlighting his ability to play multiple positions effectively.
Power noted Gilbert's solid performance as he transitions from cornerback to safety, demonstrating quickness and instinctive play in coverage. He has shown physicality on the field, excelling not just in defense but also in special teams and offense, scoring in various ways during his junior year. His speed is further exemplified by a personal best of 10.57 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
As Auburn continues to build its recruiting class, Gilbert joins other top prospects, including running back Myson Johnson-Cook and offensive lineman Layton von Bradt. Gilbert remains confident in his development, stating, “I have this mindset no matter where I go I’m going to be developed and make it to the NFL.” His commitment is a promising sign for the Tigers as they aim to enhance their football program.
