Bayern Munich Ascends to Top of UEFA Rankings Ahead of 2026/27 Season
BERLIN, GERMANY - On May 23, 2026, Bayern Munich's head coach Vincent Kompany celebrated with the DFB Cup trophy after a match against VfB Stuttgart at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Under Kompany's leadership, Bayern has enjoyed significant success over the past five seasons, securing four Bundesliga championships, a DFB-Pokal, and three Franz Beckenbauer Supercups.
Despite some disappointments in the Champions League against teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich has been recognized by UEFA as the leading club globally. UEFA's recent rankings, which evaluate performance over a rolling five-year period, place Bayern ahead of Real Madrid as the top-ranked club heading into the 2026/27 season.
According to The Athletic’s Colin Millar, Bayern’s ascension in the rankings is primarily attributed to their impressive results in continental competitions, including consecutive victories over Real Madrid in the Champions League Quarter-finals during the 2025/26 season. Their consistent performance, reaching the Quarter-finals or beyond in the last five years, solidified their position at the top.
In contrast, PSG has slipped to third place, hindered by an inability to break into the top eight of the league phase since the tournament's format change, despite their back-to-back Champions League titles. Other notable movements in the rankings include Aston Villa rising 29 spots to 17th, while Chelsea fell to 12th after their loss to PSG, and Manchester United dropped from 11th to 21st after a season without European football.
Bayern Munich is not only a dominant force in Germany but also a significant player on the European stage, showcasing their prowess in both domestic and international competitions.
