Bengals Stars Chase and Higgins Set Sights on Championship Glory
Ja'Marr Chase is steering clear of personal ambitions this season, opting instead to focus solely on the ultimate team goal: returning to the Super Bowl, with the hope of securing a championship title. His teammate, Tee Higgins, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that they have nothing left to prove individually.
With the entire offensive lineup from last season back in action and significant defensive enhancements underway, both players are adamant that their sights are set higher than just making the playoffs. "I feel like we’ve done everything we need to do personal accolades-wise, but we’ve got to win a championship," Higgins remarked during a media session.
During their first press conference of the offseason on June 2, Chase reinforced Higgins' thoughts. "It’s not stats, there's nothing I can think about that I say I want to go into this year and do," he stated. The Bengals are currently engaged in Phase 3 of their offseason workout program, which commenced on Monday, laying the foundation for future success.
Chase, a Triple Crown winner two years ago and a consistent Pro Bowl selection, alongside Higgins, who played 15 games last season for the first time since 2022, is confident in their offensive capabilities. Meanwhile, quarterback Joe Burrow, who has yet to claim an MVP title, has been named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year twice.
This offseason, the Bengals made bold moves to bolster their defense, addressing past shortcomings that have hindered their performance. Higgins expressed his surprise at the team's decision to trade their first-round draft pick to acquire his former Clemson teammate, Dexter Lawrence, stating, "Obviously we want to win ‘ships, but definitely that was a big move, and happy we made it."
Chase is cautious about comparisons to the 2021 squad that made a Super Bowl appearance, insisting that this year’s team is different. “We can't even talk about that, look at it, or compare,” he said, highlighting the need for the squad to develop chemistry on the field.
Injuries have been a concern, particularly with Burrow missing significant time last season. However, with backup Joe Flacco now more acquainted with the offense, Cincinnati is hopeful for a more cohesive performance. Higgins is also focused on maintaining his health, having adjusted his training and recovery routines to maximize his playing time. "I gotta stay healthy and do what I can to, you know, help my team get Ws," he added.
Despite a few players in contract negotiations, the team is unified in their commitment this offseason, with all members participating in Organized Team Activities. “We all want the same thing at the end of the day,” Higgins concluded. “Guys just want to grind.”
