Big 12 Schools Weigh Boycotts Following Controversial Sorsby Ruling

The tensions within the Big 12 Conference have escalated as Texas Tech's quarterback Brendan Sorsby's recent legal victory has sparked outrage among rival schools. Sorsby, who previously played at Indiana and Cincinnati, faced potential ineligibility after it was revealed that he had placed thousands of bets over the past four years, including wagers on his own team. In a surprising turn of events, a Lubbock County judge granted him a temporary injunction, allowing him to play this upcoming season, despite the NCAA's initial ruling of ineligibility.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, who expressed concern about the implications of the ruling on college athletics. “The ramifications of today’s ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership," Yormark stated. He has initiated talks with conference athletic directors and other stakeholders to address the situation, anticipating an appeal from the NCAA within the next couple of days.

Adding to the discontent, Colorado's athletic director, Fernando Lovo, echoed Yormark's sentiments, highlighting the importance of accountability in college sports. “The injunction issued today regarding Brendan Sorsby is troubling as his admitted actions are a clear violation of long-held standards of integrity in college athletics,” Lovo remarked, emphasizing that the core values of competition are at stake.

In light of these developments, there have been discussions among Big 12 schools about potentially boycotting Texas Tech. Kansas State's athletic director, Gene Taylor, confirmed that serious conversations are underway regarding the implications of scheduling games against the Red Raiders. He noted that while they aren't set to play Texas Tech this season, the issue extends beyond just the Big 12 conference.

Arizona State, which previously achieved a notable upset against Texas Tech last season, is scheduled to meet the Red Raiders in Lubbock on October 17. Meanwhile, Sorsby has entered a residential treatment program for gambling addiction, and his only penalty so far is sitting out nonconference games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.

Gambling infractions have long been a significant concern in college sports, with past violations leading to severe consequences, underscoring the seriousness of this issue within the athletic community.
