Boxing Legends Celebrate Ricky Hatton at Heartfelt Manchester Tribute

A remarkable gathering of British boxing legends came together on a memorable night at the AO Arena in Manchester for "Evening 4 Ricky," a heartfelt celebration honoring the late Ricky Hatton. This live tribute offered fans a unique glimpse into Hatton’s illustrious career, complemented by captivating anecdotes, top-notch entertainment, and a sing-along featuring some of Hatton’s favorite songs, all reflecting the pride of his home city.

Among those present were notable figures such as Darren Barker, Marco Antonio Barrera, Tony Bellew, Frank Bruno, and Tyson Fury, along with Hatton’s son, Campbell. In a pre-event interview, Campbell reflected on his father's legacy and recounted one of Hatton's most memorable fights against Kostya Tszyu, which occurred nearly 21 years prior to the tribute event.

The evening was not only a tribute but also marked the official international launch of the Ricky Hatton Foundation, established to enhance mental health resources, community initiatives, and educational projects across the UK. The emotional atmosphere resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the profound impact Hatton had on the sport and its community.

During the event, Dalton “Thunder” Smith, who currently holds the WBC Super Lightweight title once carried by Hatton, was honored as the first recipient of the newly created WBC Ricky Hatton Legacy Belt. This award, designed by the World Boxing Council, will be given annually to a British boxer who embodies Hatton's fighting spirit and integrity.

Smith, celebrated for his recent championship win against Subriel Matias, expressed his admiration for Hatton, stating, “Growing up, Ricky Hatton was my hero. Everything about him – the way he fought, the way he carried himself and the connection he had with the fans – was what made me fall in love with boxing.” He received the belt from Campbell and Barrera, marking a special moment for him and his family.

Looking ahead, Smith is eager to return to the ring against Alberto Puello, with hopes of rescheduling their bout this fall after a recent injury. Both Smith and Hatton have carved out their legacies in the super-lightweight division, known for their relentless styles and deep connections to their northern roots. Hatton, who tragically passed away at 46 in September, remains an enduring symbol in British boxing history.
