Braves Writer Advocates for Trade to Secure Elite Starter Following Strider's Return
The Atlanta Braves celebrated their 18th series win of the season on Saturday, with Spencer Strider contributing to the victory. Despite facing significant injuries earlier in the year, the Braves' pitching rotation has shown remarkable resilience.
After returning from an oblique injury that sidelined him for the first month of the season, Strider has begun to regain his form. Although his performances have not been flawless, he has managed to secure a 3-1 record since his comeback. His initial injury had forced him to miss the start of the season, as confirmed by manager Walt Weiss prior to the season opener.
Despite the team's impressive standing as the best in baseball, Scott Coleman from Battery Power argues that the Braves should actively seek an elite starting pitcher before the trade deadline. “My take on Strider after the last few weeks is he’s a totally fine mid rotation guy but Alex has to add an impact starter at the deadline. No excuses. I don’t really care what the price is. You have the money and prospect capital,” Coleman stated.
Fortunately for Braves fans, general manager Alex Anthopoulos has already begun to investigate potential trade options and has expressed intentions to be proactive as the deadline approaches. “I fully expect and hope that we will be engaged in trades come July. I'm not trying to overly excite anybody or promise anything. But if we're playing the way we are right now, we're going to be in there,” Anthopoulos remarked.
While Chris Sale stands out as the team's ace, the drop-off in quality beyond him is evident. Acquiring another top-tier starter could significantly enhance the Braves' chances for a deep playoff run, instilling greater confidence in fans as October looms. With ample financial resources and a wealth of prospects, the Braves have the capacity to target virtually any pitcher available, assuming the demands are reasonable. The forthcoming trade deadline promises to be a pivotal moment for Atlanta.
