Brewers Dominate Giants in Matchup of Ex-College Coaches

In a decisive game at American Family Field in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Brewers (36-21) triumphed over the San Francisco Giants (23-37) with a score of 16-2 on Monday. This matchup marked the beginning of a four-game series and showcased two Major League Baseball managers with a history of coaching in Tennessee's college baseball scene.

Pat Murphy, who is in his third year as the Brewers' manager, and Tony Vitello, leading the Giants in his inaugural season, both have notable collegiate coaching legacies. Murphy helmed Maryville College in 1983 and later enjoyed a successful tenure at Notre Dame and Arizona State, while Vitello guided the University of Tennessee to a national championship during his eight years from 2018 to 2025.

Among the players, former Volunteer Drew Gilbert, who played under Vitello from 2020 to 2022, made an appearance as a pinch hitter for the Giants, although he did not achieve a hit in his two at-bats during the game.

Murphy's impressive coaching resume includes a stellar 318-116-1 record at Notre Dame, where he reached the NCAA Tournament regionals four times, and a remarkable 629-284-1 record at Arizona State, leading them to four College World Series appearances. In contrast, Vitello's accomplishments at Tennessee include a 341-131 record, one national championship, and multiple SEC titles.

The two teams will face off again in Game 2 at 7:40 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, followed by Game 3 at the same time on Wednesday, and the series finale scheduled for 2:10 p.m. EDT on Thursday.
