Byng announces 2026 Athletic Hall of Fame class

Five teams and 10 individuals make up the 2026 Byng Athletic Hall of Fame class.

The Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex.

“Generations of Pirate greatness will come together once again as we honor the athletes, coaches, teams, and supporters who helped build the tradition of Byng Athletics,” Byng Athletic Director and chairman of the Hall of Fame committee Jason Wilkerson said.

The teams to be inducted into the 2026 Byng Athletic Hall of Fame include the 1972 baseball team, the 1975 girls basketball team, the 1976 girls basketball team, the 1951 girls basketball team and the 1952 girls basketball team.

All five teams captured state championships.

“These teams helped lay the foundation for the standard, pride, toughness and tradition that still define Pirate athletics today,” Wilkerson said.

Former Byng coaches Bobby Johns and Bill Barrett will be inducted as Legacy members of the Hall of Fame.

“The Legacy inductions include individuals like Bobby Johns and Bill Barrett whose impact on Byng Athletics extended far beyond wins and losses and whose legacy continues to shape generations of Pirates,” Wilkerson said.

Gregg Wallis will be inducted under the umbrella of a Contributor Award.

“This award recognizes outstanding service, support and dedication to Byng Athletics and the student-athletes of this community,” Wilkerson said.

Individual inductees include coach Burl Plunkett, Marion Muncrief, Rick Emrbee, Ron Rich, Roy Haney, Glenda West and LaRuth Meeks.

“This class represents decades of excellence, commitment, character and championship tradition,” Wilkerson said. “Some were stars. Some were builders. Some changed programs forever. and they all helped shape the story of Byng athletics.

“We look forward to celebrating these incredible Pirates and welcoming former teammates, families, alumni and supporters back together for another unforgettable night honoring our history.”

Additional information regarding tickets, sponsorship opportunities and inductee features will publish in the coming months.
