BYU's New Cornerbacks Coach Highlights AJ Dybantsa's Role in Football Recruiting
Lewis Walker, the newly appointed cornerbacks coach at BYU, recently shared insights on the significant impact of former basketball star AJ Dybantsa in the football program's recruiting efforts. Dybantsa, who stands an impressive 6-feet-11 inches tall with an 8-foot-10 reach, is expected to be a top pick in the upcoming NBA draft, but his influence extends beyond the basketball court.
During an appearance on the "Y’s Guys" livestream, Walker noted that potential recruits often inquire about Dybantsa, saying, “When I go out recruiting, guys always ask, ‘Do you know AJ Dybantsa?’ I say, ‘Yeah, who doesn’t know that guy?’” This recognition leads to deeper discussions about Dybantsa's choice to join BYU and how it reflects the training and opportunities provided by the coaching staff, particularly under Coach Kevin Young.
Walker emphasized the unique environment at BYU, explaining how it minimizes distractions for athletes. “You come to BYU, there is not another place in the country where your distractions are going to be eliminated the way they are at BYU,” he stated. This focus on a supportive atmosphere resonates with recruits, making a compelling case for joining the Cougars.
Walker, who transitioned from North Dakota State to BYU, recalled the moment he received a call from BYU’s offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick. He expressed excitement about the opportunity, particularly because of his previous connection with head coach Kalani Sitake. “You know when the head coach hops on the phone it’s going one way unless I totally botch it,” Walker remarked, highlighting the importance of their past working relationship.
As he prepares to lead the cornerbacks, Walker is optimistic about his roster, which includes standout players like Evan Johnson and Tre Alexander. He praised Johnson's intentionality in practice and game situations, calling him an exemplary player to emulate, while also highlighting Alexander's impressive athleticism and intelligence on the field.
Looking ahead, Walker is eager to take on the challenge of enhancing the BYU football program and is ready to embrace his new role, saying, “I bleed blue now.”
