Cadillac Dominates Detroit with Pole-to-Pole Victory in IMSA Race
The No. 31 Whelen Action Express Cadillac V-Series.R showcased its dominance at the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic, leading an impressive 73 out of 82 laps to secure victory on Saturday's street course. This triumph marked Cadillac's first overall win in Detroit since 2022 and was complemented by a win in the GTD Pro category from the No. 3 Corvette Z06 GT3.R, resulting in a double victory for GM Motorsports at their home event.
Jack Aitken, who took the wheel for the final stretch, expressed his excitement, stating, “To do it here at the home of GM and Cadillac with so many friends and family with us, you know, my team absolutely nailed it.” Aitken’s success allowed him to seize the lead in the points standings after teammate Earl Bamber started the race from pole position. The No. 31 Cadillac has now achieved an impressive streak of seven consecutive podium finishes since last September at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a record for the hybrid prototype era.
Teammate Earl Bamber remarked on the tense final laps, saying, “It was pretty nervy with those last yellows, just watching. I’m just really happy for Cadillac, and happy for the Corvette guys also, to finally get the win here in our home race.” The Cadillac performed exceptionally throughout the weekend, showcasing speed right from the start.
Finishing in second place was the No. 25 BMW M Team WRT Hybrid V8, followed by the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac V-Series.R and the No. 93 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06. In the GTD Pro category, Antonio Garcia secured the win for Corvette Racing, marking the 119th IMSA victory for the team. Garcia and teammate Alexander Sims led for 73 of the 79 laps, with Garcia tying for 18th on the all-time victory list. “Super happy to be on victory lane in Chevrolet land, underneath the towers," Garcia said. "I think all the big bosses will be very happy as we are. So fantastic drive by Alex, putting it on pole, opening up a big gap. Great race overall.”
Next up, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will head to Watkins Glen International on June 28.
