Carson Benge Shines with Five Hits, Showcasing His Talents

Carson Benge is making significant strides in his major league career. After an initial period of adjustment, the young player delivered one of his standout performances on Sunday, leading the New York Mets to victory against the San Diego Padres. Benge became only the third player in Mets' history to achieve a 5-for-5 game, joining an elite group that includes the likes of Pete Alonso, the last rookie to accomplish the feat in 2019.

“Pretty impressive, it was really cool to see,” commented Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. He praised Benge's ability to hit line drives consistently, noting, “Rockets pretty much everywhere, using the middle of the field, staying short and on top of the ball.” Benge's contributions were instrumental in securing a solid team victory.

The 23-year-old set the tone early, hitting a single on the fourth pitch of the game and scoring the first run shortly after. He continued to make an impact by hitting singles in the third and fifth innings, the latter of which helped initiate a rally that led to a pitching change for the Padres. Benge also launched a home run in the sixth inning and tripled down the right field line in the eighth, finishing the game just one double short of hitting for the cycle. He tallied three runs and two RBIs during the match. “Today was definitely nice,” Benge said. “It’s always nice to get two hits let alone five, so being able to do that today was definitely pretty special.”

With the Mets dealing with injuries to key players, Benge has seamlessly stepped into the leadoff position, boasting an impressive .316 batting average, along with five home runs and 20 RBIs since early May. Mendoza expressed confidence in Benge's abilities, stating, “We’ve seen the type of player and the talent and just the things he can do on a baseball field -- he’s settling in, is comfortable, and is just going out and playing his game.” He added, “We’re going to see a lot of games like that moving forward where he’s just totally locked in and he's doing a lot of things to help us win baseball games -- he’s just a special player.”
