Charlevoix golf cards season-low to earn Northern Shores title

CHARLEVOIX — When the 2026 golf season began for the Charlevoix boys golf team, there were a handful of trophies the Rayders planned on adding to the case.

One of those was a Northern Shores Conference title, one that wasn’t going to come easy in a competitive league this season.

In the midst of trophy season now, the Rayders knocked off their first goal with a season-best round in Cheboygan last week, firing a 301 to capture the NSC crown.

Four Rayders shot in the 70s or lower on the day, led by senior Bryce Boss, who claimed his second straight Northern Shores individual title with a round of 68, a season-low.

The round came behind seven birdies, including two straight to begin the day.

Boss earned the title a year ago as well, shooting a varsity career-low 67.

Charlevoix’s round held off impressive displays from others within the league, as Elk Rapids carded a 326 to place second, followed by Boyne City’s 327.

Harbor Springs also shot 337; Cheboygan, 355; Kalkaska, 361; Kingsley, 382; and Grayling, 393.

After Boss on the leaderboard, Charlevoix teammate Landen Whisler came through with a season-low 75 to place second within the league.

Charlevoix also had Joe Gaffney and Maxwell Drenth place fifth with rounds of 79, Keane Helstrom shot an 88 and Blake Boss fired an 89.

For Boyne City, Tanner Sigulinsky shot 79, Connor Uy finished with an 81, Drew Neer, 82; Cameron Little, 85; and Cooper Vizina, 93.

A young Harbor Springs team was led by freshman William Shepler with an 83, followed by Chase Lafaive’s 84; Vincent Alonzi, 85; Colin Blanck, 85; Noah Marquardt, 90; and John Westbrook, 92;

The Northern Shores championships set the stage for a busy stretch ahead for area golf programs, with regionals just ahead on Tuesday and Thursday, May 26 and 28 for local teams.

Petoskey and Gaylord will each head to a St. Johns hosted Division 2 regional, while Harbor Springs will host at Birchwood in a Division 4 regional that’ll include Charlevoix. Boyne City then takes on a Division 3 field at Red Hawk Golf Club in Tawas.

First up for everyone was a trip to Charlevoix’s Belvedere course for the annual Jim Glynn Rayder Classic on Monday.

Note: Monday's round at Belvedere was called after a handful of holes when thunderstorms moved into the area.
