Chris Harris Supports McLaren's Tyre Strategy at Canadian Grand Prix but Critiques Timing
Former Top Gear presenter and automotive expert Chris Harris has expressed his support for McLaren's decision to commence the Canadian Grand Prix on intermediate tyres, calling it a strategic risk worth taking. However, he raised concerns regarding the team's delay in pitting their drivers as the race progressed. The choice to begin on intermediates surprised many observers in Montreal, especially after Lando Norris, who started in third position, quickly took the lead and built a two-second advantage by the end of the first lap.
Despite facing criticism for the overall strategy, Harris pointed out that the rationale behind the tyre choice was sound when considering the track conditions at the time. During his podcast, Chris Harris on Cars, he commended the race for showcasing "real racing" instead of the typical back-and-forth seen in some races where technology plays a decisive role in overtaking.
"So the two things about the situation I found fascinating were that we had real racing as opposed to that sort of yo-yoing bungee thing where someone gets past and then someone else deploys a bit of totally ridiculous technology and appears to get straight back past them," he remarked, emphasizing the competitive nature of the race.
Harris elaborated on the logic behind McLaren's choice of intermediate tyres, noting that in certain scenarios, such as demonstration events without tyre warmers, teams often use softer compounds for a short duration to gain a competitive edge. He suggested that McLaren might have anticipated gaining track position amidst chaotic racing behind them, effectively mitigating risk.
However, he found it perplexing that McLaren did not change tyres sooner, highlighting it as a significant error in their strategy. Unfortunately for Norris, he ended up retiring from the race due to a gearbox issue, while Oscar Piastri finished in 11th place. The team's decisions will likely be scrutinized as they analyze the race performance moving forward.
