Cincinnati Bengals’ Erick All Jr. Overcomes Injury Hurdles, Ready to Make His Mark Again
Erick All Jr. faced a daunting moment in 2024 when he re-injured his ACL, a setback that reawakened fears about the future of his football career following a previous injury during his final year at Iowa. Now, as he rejoins the Cincinnati Bengals in practice, he grapples with lingering concerns about his knee but remains determined to push through.
Having successfully navigated a challenging 19-month recovery journey, All feels a renewed sense of confidence in his knee after participating in Organized Team Activities this week. “Of course, yeah, I mean, I still do worry about it sometimes,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of focusing on what he can control. “I try to just focus more on the controllables.”
Despite the odds, All was not completely taken aback by the re-injury during his rookie season, having sensed that something was amiss. After being drafted in the fourth round by his hometown team, he realized that his knee still felt unstable. Following a consultation with Dr. Daniel Cooper, an orthopedic expert, it became clear that the initial surgery had not been successful, necessitating a complete reconstruction of the knee.
“Pretty much they just had to take out everything that Iowa did,” All explained, detailing the extensive nature of the surgery. After a three-month healing period, he underwent ACL reconstruction, followed by a nine-month recovery process. “Everything went smooth, and then you know, Dr. Cooper, he's legit, so everything feels fine,” he added, expressing his readiness to return to the field.
Now, All is motivated not only by his love for football but also by a desire to support his family, which includes his two young boys. Although not yet fully cleared to play, he feels prepared to contribute significantly when the time comes. Bengals coach Zac Taylor praised All’s resilience, noting, “To have the significance of the injuries that he's had, to miss a whole season... it's been challenging for him.”
All is eager to demonstrate his capabilities, aiming to prove that he can be a reliable asset for the team. “I want to show that I'm gonna be better than I was,” he stated passionately. “I want to come back and be the dawg that they need me to be.”
