Cincinnati Reds Seek Consistency in Starting Rotation
The Cincinnati Reds entered the season with high expectations for their pitching rotation, which was anticipated to be a key strength for the team. Despite some promising performances, achieving consistency will be crucial for the Reds as they navigate challenges with a struggling bullpen.
A standout performer has been Chase Burns, who currently ranks among the top five in MLB ERA. “You can see that he wants to be really, really good,” remarked veteran pitcher Brady Singer. “He’s obviously really, really good. He’s just excited to go out there and have success.” Burns has demonstrated impressive versatility in his approach, adapting his pitching style to achieve success in various situations, whether that means inducing soft contact or generating strikeouts with his effective fastball-slider combination.
Burns is emerging as a legitimate All-Star candidate, and he remains focused on contributing to the team's success rather than personal accolades. “I want to be known as someone who can help the team win and hopefully be a frontrunning starter for this team in the future. Every time I step onto the mound, we have a chance to win today,” he stated.
While Burns has energized the rotation, the performance of other veteran pitchers has been less than stellar. Singer has struggled to maintain his desired velocity and has surrendered too many home runs, resulting in a 5.89 ERA this season. “There are a lot of ups and downs and stuff like that,” Singer noted. “I’m getting kicked in the teeth right now, obviously. I’ll keep trying to figure out different ways to pitch your way out of it. It’s going to get better at some point.”
The Reds had hoped Chris Paddack would provide more stability, but after a challenging start to the season, he has transitioned to the bullpen as Rhett Lowder returns from the injured list. Paddack expressed determination, saying, “I know there’s more in there. I’m still searching and trying to put consecutive zeros on the scoreboard.” Meanwhile, Nick Lodolo is showing signs of improvement following a month-long absence due to a blister, and Andrew Abbott has rebounded from a tough May. Lowder's recent outing was a mixed bag; although he threw three shutout innings, he struggled with pitch command, which he acknowledged, stating, “I’ve got to get ahead and be more efficient.”
