Corning's Season Ends Again at Hands of Lancaster in Class AAA Softball Quarterfinals
For the second consecutive year, the Corning Hawks found their season cut short by the Lancaster Legends, the champions of Section 6. In a tense matchup at Gates-Chili High School, the Legends overcame a five-inning standstill against Corning's standout pitcher, Matti Johnston, to secure a 3-1 win in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AAA regional final.
The turning point came in the sixth inning when Alyssa Brunner launched a home run to right-center field, breaking up Johnston's perfect game and tying the score. Following that, Isabella DiMino's single and an error allowed her to score, putting Lancaster ahead 2-1. Abigail DiMino then contributed a two-out RBI single, extending the lead to two runs.
Corning's Katie Grover managed a single in the seventh, but the Hawks were unable to generate the offensive momentum that had propelled them to an impressive 18-0 record and the top spot in the Class AAA rankings. The Legends' Maddy Matthews was formidable on the mound, allowing just five hits while striking out eight batters and walking one.
Corning's only run came early in the first inning, initiated by Johnston's lead-off single, which she later converted into a score when a pop-up by Sophie Schoonover fell in the infield. Johnston finished the game with seven strikeouts and no walks, while two of the runs she allowed were unearned.
This defeat marks a tough end for Corning, who were aiming for their third straight appearance in the final four, having previously clinched the inaugural Class AAA championship two years ago. Last season, they were eliminated by Lancaster in the state semifinals. The Legends, now with a record of 14-5, are set to face Section 2's Saratoga Springs in the state semifinals on Friday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at Greenlight Park.
