DC Defenders Stun Orlando Storm, Advance to UFL Championship
DAYTONA BEACH — The top seed in the UFL playoffs will not be advancing to the United Bowl, as the defending champions, the DC Defenders, pulled off a surprising 28-22 victory against the Orlando Storm on June 7 at Daytona Stadium. This result not only eliminates the Storm, who enjoyed a stellar regular season in their inaugural campaign, but also keeps the Defenders' hopes alive for back-to-back championships.
In a game that marked a rare occurrence in professional sports, this matchup was the third consecutive contest between the two teams, a feat last seen in 1943 when the New York Giants and Washington Redskins faced off three times in a row. After losing the initial meetings, the Defenders finally triumphed in this playoff encounter.
Orlando's offense, led by MVP finalist Jack Plummer, who boasted a remarkable 17-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, struggled significantly. Despite reaching the red zone several times, they only managed one offensive touchdown. DC's defense, anchored by fellow finalist Derick Roberson, proved impenetrable, holding the Storm to just two field goals early on. "The red zone was not kind to our offense today, and that’s unfortunate," lamented Orlando head coach Anthony Becht.
Jason Bean, who had taken over as DC's starting quarterback after a mid-season trade, was instrumental in the victory. Completing 18 of 33 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown, he also rushed for 40 yards. Bean expressed relief at finally finding success against a team he had faced multiple times this season, stating, "Being in the playbook for a certain amount of time... it’s got to click some time."
Although the game was initially scheduled to be played in Orlando, a scheduling conflict with an international soccer match forced a venue change to Daytona Stadium. The unexpected switch drew a crowd of 6,317 fans, creating a vibrant atmosphere that included supporters from both Orlando and DC. Coach Becht noted the positive impact of the crowd, saying, "They were fun, they were loud... just really blessed and thankful." The Storm's fans, despite leaving disappointed, showcased their commitment in the team's debut season.
