Denny Hamlin Discusses Future in NASCAR Following Michigan Victory

Denny Hamlin continues to demonstrate remarkable skill on the track, recently securing his second straight NASCAR Cup Series victory at the FireKeepers Casino 400 in Michigan. The 45-year-old racer clinched the win with an impressive margin of 11.11 seconds, marking the largest lead of his career. With three wins this season, including previous triumphs in Nashville and Las Vegas, Hamlin sits second in the points standings, just 51 points behind Tyler Reddick.

After the race, Joe Gibbs, the owner of Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota, praised his performance, stating, “This might be the most exceptional thing he's done.” Despite his current success, speculation about Hamlin’s retirement looms, as he is the oldest full-time driver in the Cup Series.

In a post-race interview with Prime Sports, Hamlin hinted at his retirement plans, indicating a commitment to Gibbs Racing regardless of the outcome of this season. "I told them, ‘Just check with me in six months,’” he stated. He acknowledged the potential of young driver Brent Crews, who could be ready to take over by the end of next year. “If it was right now, it would be really hard. But I find it hard to believe that we’re going to be at this level at this time next year,” he added.

Hamlin's current contract with Joe Gibbs Racing is set to last until the end of the 2027 season, with Crews, an 18-year-old driver from North Carolina, emerging as a likely replacement given his strong performance in lower-tier racing.

During the press conference, Hamlin expressed concerns about the physical toll of racing, noting, “I’m planning for the downfall that I know will come.” He reflected on the inevitable decline that comes with age, stating that while his eyesight and reflexes remain sharp, he is already feeling the effects of physical strain.

Despite his achievements, Hamlin is realistic about his future, acknowledging that reaching eighth place on the all-time wins leaderboard, currently held by Dale Earnhardt with 76 victories, may be out of reach. “I ain’t getting to eighth, so what am I doing? You know what I mean? I’m content,” he remarked. He has yet to secure a Cup Series championship, having finished in the top four seven times, including last season's second-place finish to Kyle Larson.
