Denver and Colorado College's Fierce Battle for the Gold Pan Ranks #6 in College Hockey Rivalries
The intense rivalry known as the Battle for the Gold Pan, contested between the University of Denver and Colorado College, has earned a spot as the sixth most notable clash in college hockey history. While the competition boasts a rich legacy, Denver's recent success has slightly overshadowed the rivalry's intensity, making each matchup a highly anticipated event.
Established during the 1993-94 season by former coaches Don Lucia of Colorado College and Frank Serratore of Denver, the Gold Pan trophy symbolizes this fierce competition. Currently, Denver holds the edge in Gold Pan victories, leading 19-13. However, the rivalry extends far beyond just these trophy matches, as the two teams have faced off over a century, with Denver leading the historical series 205-125-22.
The early days of their matchups were dominated by Colorado College, which routinely defeated Denver between 1950 and 1953. The Pioneers struggled significantly until they managed their first win in the tenth meeting, marking a turnaround that would lead to an eight-game winning streak from 1952 to 1954. Denver's rise culminated in their first national championship in 1958, ushering in a period of dominance that saw them defeat the Tigers in 21 consecutive games starting in 1959.
However, the 1970s proved challenging for Denver, as they faced a decline due to various factors, including financial issues and NCAA sanctions. During this time, Colorado College managed to win 18 out of 43 encounters, despite both teams experiencing difficulties. The rivalry remained fierce, highlighted by notable incidents such as the 1965 fracas that required fire hoses to calm the crowd.
The early 2000s saw a resurgence for both teams, culminating in the 2004-05 season when they were each ranked #1 at different points. Denver ultimately triumphed, securing the Gold Pan and achieving another national championship. The original Gold Pan trophy, lost in 2004, led to the introduction of a 20-pound bronze replacement in 2007, which Denver has predominantly retained since then. This storied rivalry continues to captivate fans and players alike.
