Denver Broncos Linebacker Jonathon Cooper Detained Following Domestic Violence Incident
The Denver Broncos are preparing for the 2026 season as the reigning champions of the AFC West, boasting a formidable defense. One of their standout players, outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper, played a significant role in last season's success, contributing eight sacks to a record-setting total of 68 sacks for the franchise. However, as training camp approaches, an incident off the field has thrust Cooper into a troubling legal spotlight.
Cooper and his girlfriend, Jade Fiegen, were arrested on Thursday night in connection with a domestic violence case linked to a dispute at Cooper's residence in the Denver area. According to records from the Douglas County jail, Cooper was booked on two counts of domestic violence and one count of criminal mischief after Parker Police detained him shortly after 11 PM, leading to his processing at the jail around 2:38 AM on Friday.
The confrontation reportedly escalated within Cooper's apartment amidst allegations of infidelity. Fiegen informed authorities that she threw Cooper's phone against a wall during their argument and claimed that, as she attempted to leave, he grabbed her by the neck, lifted her off the ground, and held her against the wall for approximately one minute. She also alleged that Cooper threw her to the ground three times during the altercation.
Both individuals face misdemeanor charges related to domestic violence and criminal mischief, with charges stemming from the damage inflicted on each other’s phones during the incident. Following his court appearance on Friday, Cooper was released on a personal recognizance bond, and he later expressed remorse on social media, stating, “I apologize to my family and my friends and my community… And so many others. Sincerely. I apologize. This situation is not who I am.”
The NFL and the Broncos have confirmed their awareness of the incident. Cooper's future with the team now hangs in the balance as he enters his sixth season. With his impressive statistics—including a four-year, $54 million contract—questions loom over his potential suspension and its impact on the team’s defensive strategy. The league's domestic violence policy typically includes a minimum six-game suspension for first-time offenders, although the specifics of each case can lead to varying outcomes.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Cooper is scheduled for a disposition hearing today, June 8. The Broncos, who are set to kick off their 2026 regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 14, now face uncertainty regarding Cooper's participation in the upcoming season.
