Disabled Racing Drivers Achieve Ambition at Iconic Circuit
Two members of the unique racing team comprised entirely of drivers with disabilities have realized their dream of competing on a renowned European track. Noah Cosby from Towcester and Asha Silva from Kettering represented Team BRIT Racing at the prestigious Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
Cosby, who endured a T6 spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis from the ribs down, and Silva, diagnosed with ADHD and adult autism, spoke about their exhilarating experience. "Once you [start to] notice that us being on track does make a difference to other people's lives... there's nothing better than that," remarked Cosby. He emphasized that the impact they have on others is "more rewarding than taking home any trophies… it's what we do outside of the track that matters most to us."
In an interview on The Motorsport Show with Robert Constantin and Charlotte Vowden, both drivers described their time at Spa as "surreal." "It's so overwhelming how grand the track is, but it is a feeling I haven't replicated anywhere else before," Cosby shared. Silva added, "It was an extremely amazing experience."
Cosby, who transitioned to motorsport following a freestyle motocross accident, expressed determination not to let his injury hinder his passion for racing. "Turning to a different form of motorsport that I could compete at a level playing field with was the biggest thing for myself mentally to get beyond this life-changing injury," he stated.
Silva, whose neurodivergence makes her sensitive to loud environments, finds solace in the race car. Despite the usual racket and fumes of a racetrack, she noted that the moment she climbs into a car, her mind becomes "silenced" and "focused." "As soon as I get in the car, everything is switched off," she explained.
