East Kentwood Claims Narrow Victory Over Detroit Catholic Central for D1 Track Championship

East Kentwood narrowly secured the MHSAA Division 1 state championship title during the track meet held on Saturday at Rockford High School, edging out Detroit Catholic Central with a score of 63-62. This victory marks East Kentwood's first state championship since their impressive three-year streak from 2017 to 2019.

The team amassed their points through a diverse range of events, achieving outright wins in only two categories: the 800-meter relay and the pole vault, where Reece Emeott emerged victorious. In addition to these wins, East Kentwood athletes contributed points in the 100, 200, 400, 3200, and both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, along with strong performances in the short relays, ultimately leading them to victory.

In Division 2, Harper Woods dominated with impressive performances in both the 400 and 800-meter relays, bolstered by standout contributions from football athletes DeAndre Bidden and Dakota Guerrant. Meanwhile, Monroe’s St. Mary Catholic Central clinched the Division 3 title by securing the 400-meter relay and scoring in multiple events, narrowly defeating Otsego. Hillsdale Academy triumphed in Division 4, winning the championship by just two points over Eau Claire.

Individually, Detroit Catholic Central had notable achievements, with hurdler Zacchaeus Brocks finishing a standout season by winning titles in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. The team also celebrated victories in the 400-meter relay, while senior Paxton Heitsch took home the shot put title, and junior Malachi Clayton won the long jump.

Other highlights include Walled Lake Western’s Rodney Endsley winning both the 200 and 400-meter sprints, and Clarkston’s Wendell Childs Jr. repeating as the 800-meter champion, setting sights on a potential three-peat in 2027. The 100-meter dash was a nail-biter, with Detroit Martin Luther King sophomore Vernall Lee edging out Belleville's Peyton Trammer by a mere .01 seconds. Detroit Renaissance and Ann Arbor Pioneer also secured relay victories in the 1600 and 3200-meter relays, respectively.

As the season concludes, East Kentwood’s triumph reinforces the competitive spirit of Michigan high school track, showcasing the depth of talent across various divisions.
