Elfyn Evans Secures Second Victory of 2026 at Rally Japan, Extending Championship Lead

Elfyn Evans showcased his skill on the challenging asphalt of Rally Japan, marking his second triumph of the World Rally Championship season. The Welsh driver, alongside co-driver Scott Martin, delivered a flawless performance across 20 stages, ultimately finishing 12.8 seconds ahead of reigning champion Sebastien Ogier. With this win, Evans has now claimed three victories in Rally Japan, solidifying his status as its most successful driver.

The event witnessed a remarkable display of Toyota dominance, as the team captured the top four spots, with Sami Pajari finishing third, 51.4 seconds behind, and local favorite Takamoto Katsuta in fourth, trailing by 1 minute and 3.5 seconds. "What a great weekend. Huge thanks to the team. Amazing car again on tarmac. Long way to go and too early to talk about that [championship]. We have to just enjoy this one," said Evans, who now leads the championship standings by 20 points over Katsuta.

Initially, crews anticipated dry and warm conditions as the rally transitioned from autumn to spring. However, unexpected rain on Thursday night created slippery conditions on Friday morning. Toyota’s Oliver Solberg began the rally strong, taking the early lead after winning the first stage. Evans quickly took control, moving from fourth to first with an impressive run in the Isegami’s Tunnel stage, extending his lead to 15.7 seconds over Solberg by the end of Friday.

As temperatures rose and managing tire wear became a challenge, Evans maintained his lead despite pressure from Solberg, who won two stages on Saturday morning, narrowing the gap to 10.6 seconds. However, Solberg's chances were dashed when he lost control of his car in stage 10, crashing and sustaining damage that forced his retirement. This misfortune allowed Ogier to take second place, though he struggled to challenge Evans due to unfavorable road conditions and tire issues.

Pajari continued his strong performance, achieving another podium finish, while Katsuta faced difficulties early on after a puncture in the opening stage hampered his strategy. Despite a recovery to fourth place, his hopes for a better result were thwarted. Solberg returned on Sunday to earn bonus points by winning the Power Stage, while other competitors like Adrien Fourmaux and Thierry Neuville faced their own challenges throughout the rally.

As the final asphalt rally of the Rally1 era, Rally Japan proved to be a significant event in the WRC calendar, with Evans solidifying his championship lead and captivating fans once again.
