Elliott Avent Reflects on Career as He Bids Farewell at Auburn Regional

AUBURN — Upon arriving at the team hotel for this year’s Auburn regional, NC State head coach Elliott Avent received a touching surprise. “There were like 20 letters, most handwritten, all over my room,” he shared. “I didn't know what the heck had gone on.” These heartfelt notes came from various prominent figures in college baseball, including Auburn’s head coach Butch Thompson, alongside Brian O'Connor, Danny Hall, Hal Baird, Mike Bianco, Ray Tanner, and Ron Polk. This gesture was orchestrated by Auburn's athletic department to honor Avent, who recently announced his retirement after three decades leading the Wolfpack program.

NC State's journey came to an end on Saturday, May 30, as they were eliminated by top-seeded Auburn in a high-scoring game that concluded with a 17-13 score. Despite the outcome, Avent expressed gratitude for his experience at Plainsman Park, stating, “Sure, I don't want to be going home. I don't want my career to be ending. But if it's got to end, ending on the Plains is OK with me.”

Over the years, Avent has had multiple encounters with Auburn during postseason play, facing them three times since 2018. Although he never coached in Alabama, he has strong connections to the program, including a mentorship from Baird and former staff members who worked under him. His respect within the baseball community is evident, as shown by the Auburn dugout remaining after the game to extend their congratulations.

“Everything I've heard and everything I've seen, just absolute respect,” Thompson remarked before addressing the media. He emphasized the importance of honoring great careers in baseball, noting, “When you see that and you know it's the end of the line, by choice, that was our opportunity and our way to say, 'We respect you.'”
