Engine Troubles Resurface for Chevrolet Ahead of Detroit Grand Prix

DETROIT – Chevrolet's ongoing engine issues have surfaced once more as teams gear up for the Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday. Between the morning practice and afternoon qualifying sessions, three Chevrolet engines were swapped out for drivers Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren, along with Sting Ray Robb and Rinus VeeKay from Juncos Hollinger Racing.

Despite the mechanical setbacks, Lundgaard managed to secure a fifth-place starting position during qualifying. However, his No. 7 engine is set for another replacement Saturday night. His teammates, Pato O'Ward and Nolan Siegel, will also undergo engine changes. Additionally, Team Penske's Josef Newgarden and David Malukas are among those affected, as they too will see their engines replaced.

In a statement, Chevrolet noted, “Chevrolet and our partners at Ilmor are working with several of our teams on engine changes recommended in response to a supplier quality issue. The situation has been identified and containment efforts are underway. Our focus is on preparing for tomorrow's Detroit Grand Prix.”

Earlier this month, Chevrolet engines faced similar failures during practice for the Indy 500, prompting several teams to make engine swaps ahead of qualifying. At that event, a Honda engine clinched victory, with Felix Rosenqvist's Meyer Shank Racing No. 60 Honda overtaking Malukas’ No. 12 Chevrolet at the finish line, marking Honda's second consecutive Indy 500 win.

Honda has dominated the IndyCar season thus far, winning five out of the seven races leading up to the Detroit Grand Prix and currently holding a commanding lead in the engine manufacturer standings with 594 points to Chevrolet's 525. Notably, since the race returned to the streets of downtown Detroit in 2023, a Honda engine has claimed victory every year.
