Exploring Ping's Eye-Tracking Glasses: A Game-Changer in Golf Technology

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Ping's PLD Fitting Lab in Phoenix, Arizona, where I was able to try out their innovative putters featuring eye-tracking technology. The experience was nothing short of astonishing. In crafting their new Scottsdale TEC putters, Ping applied principles from the 'Quiet Eye' theory, which has significantly impacted players like Tony Finau and Wyndham Clark in their recent performances.

The Eye Q alignment aid, which emerged from extensive research into the Quiet Eye concept, has proven effective in helping golfers enhance their focus during putting. This design includes a subtle front sight dot paired with a crown line, a combination that Ping's Erik Henrikson explained in detail during my visit. The concept revolves around utilizing eye-tracking glasses to analyze a golfer's focus in the critical moments before they take a stroke.

Quiet Eye Theory isn't exclusive to golf; it has applications in various fields. Through the use of eye-tracking glasses, such as the Tobii model I wore, researchers can collect valuable data on how individuals concentrate on their targets. My background in the firearms industry allowed me to witness similar studies, revealing how distractions can impact performance. Henrikson noted that even the positioning of a shaft band sticker could influence a golfer's ability to concentrate.

Initially, I approached this testing with skepticism, questioning how much an alignment aid could genuinely assist in focusing. However, my assumptions were quickly challenged. Interestingly, I typically prefer putters without alignment aids, favoring a clean sight dot instead. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort provided by the Scottsdale TEC's minimalistic design, backed up by the eye-tracking data that showed my focus dramatically improved with the Eye Q aid.
