FIBA Confirms Commitment to 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — FIBA is proceeding with plans for the 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar, maintaining optimism despite potential geopolitical challenges. Secretary General Andreas Zagklis stated on Friday that while the organization is prepared to adapt if necessary, they are confident in their collaboration with Qatari partners. "We have excellent partners in Qatar," he remarked during a roundtable with reporters at the NBA Finals.

Zagklis emphasized that he remains unconcerned for the time being, as the 32-team tournament is scheduled to commence on August 27, 2027, and will span approximately two and a half weeks in Doha. He noted that a meeting with the FIBA board and the local organizing committee is set for Monday, where he expects to receive the latest updates on preparations.

He highlighted the unwavering commitment of the organizing committee, which has been actively working on the project, labeled as a matter of national significance by Qatari officials. "The organizing committee has not stopped a single day," Zagklis affirmed. He added that since April 1, Qatar has remained unaffected by ongoing regional tensions.

This upcoming World Cup will mark a historic moment as it will be the first time the event is hosted in the Arab world, serving as a qualifying tournament for seven teams aiming for the men's basketball event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The United States, as the host nation, is already qualified and is targeting a sixth consecutive gold medal.

Qatar was the sole bidder for the 2027 World Cup, and Zagklis expressed confidence in the level of preparation and investment being made. "It’s the biggest celebration of national team basketball in the world," he stated, adding that the setup will allow fans to enjoy multiple games in a day across four venues situated within a short distance.

In addition to his work on the World Cup, Zagklis is also attending meetings regarding the new NBA Europe league, where FIBA is collaborating with the NBA to finalize details on the league's structure and scheduling. He hinted at a postseason format that would allow teams to host multiple home games, though he refrained from disclosing specific details until they are officially announced.
