Filip Jakubcik Leads NCAA Men’s Golf Championships as Arizona Holds Steady in Sixth
As the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships progress, the Arizona Wildcats are positioned well to advance, with senior Filip Jakubcik leading the individual competition. After an impressive second round at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, Jakubcik recorded a 6-under par 66, bringing his total score to -10 for the tournament, placing him two strokes ahead of Alabama’s William Jennings and Louisiana’s Malan Potgieter.
The Arizona team collectively shot 3-under on Saturday, maintaining a score of -4 over the first 36 holes, which ties them for sixth place among 30 competing teams. The top 15 teams will continue to vie for a spot in Monday's match play, and the Wildcats find themselves seven strokes clear of the current cut line. The top eight teams after the fourth round will move on to the next stage of the competition.
In addition to Jakubcik's stellar performance, senior Zach Pollo and freshman William Wistrand both finished the second round at even par, although their rounds were quite different. Wistrand managed to par 14 of his 18 holes, while Pollo had a more eventful day, recording five birdies, an eagle, three bogeys, and two double bogeys. Pollo’s eagle came on the par-5 10th hole, but he faced challenges shortly after, going plus-4 over the next four holes before bouncing back with three birdies on the front nine to finish even.
With one more round remaining before the cut, Arizona has positioned itself well to potentially make history by advancing to match play for the first time.
