Florida Gators Bow Out Early in NCAA Tournament After Loss to Troy
GAINESVILLE — The Florida Gators' baseball season came to a disappointing halt as they faced a premature exit from the NCAA Tournament, succumbing to Troy in a decisive matchup. This loss highlighted significant struggles for Florida's pitching staff and a lackluster offensive performance in Monday night's elimination game.
Entering the tournament as the No. 8 national seed, the Gators aimed to secure a Super Regional appearance for the first time since 2023, striving for their third College World Series trip in four years. However, Florida's record now stands at 41-21, marking their fourth regional exit since 2021.
Following Troy's impressive offensive display, which included five home runs and 17 hits in a 16-11 victory the previous night, Gators' head coach Kevin O’Sullivan opted to start Cooper Walls. The 6-foot-5 right-hander, a transfer from Hawaii, faced difficulties right from the outset, struggling to find the strike zone as he threw only one strike among his first seven pitches. This led to an early single by Josh Pyne and a two-run double from Troy's standout catcher, Jimmy Janicki.
In a bid to stabilize the game, O’Sullivan replaced Walls with Caden McDonald after Walls walked the first batter of the second inning. McDonald managed to hold the Trojans scoreless for four innings; however, the Gators' offense struggled to keep pace.
Florida managed to score in the fifth inning when Cade Kurland hit a double, followed by a single from Kyle Jones that brought him home. Yet, the game shifted dramatically in the sixth inning when O’Sullivan made another pitching change. Russell Sandefer, who struggled with control, loaded the bases, prompting O’Sullivan to bring in senior left-hander Ernesto Lugo-Canchola. Unfortunately, Lugo-Canchola's performance faltered, allowing five runs to score before Troy took a commanding 7-1 lead.
Despite a brief glimmer of hope with a run in the seventh inning, the Gators could not overcome the deficit. Troy further extended their lead with a three-run homer from Jabe Boroff in the eighth, sealing Florida's fate and ending their tournament run.
