Former Rugby League Star Kane Evans Comes Out as Gay in Groundbreaking Interview
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Kane Evans, a former rugby league international, has publicly shared his sexuality for the first time, revealing in a television interview that he is gay. Speaking candidly on Channel Nine’s “100% Footy,” Evans expressed relief at being able to openly discuss his identity, stating that it felt like a significant burden had been lifted. His announcement marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first high-profile rugby league player in Australia to come out since Ian Roberts in 1995.
Evans, who played 131 matches in the National Rugby League (NRL) between 2014 and 2021 for teams such as the Sydney Roosters, Parramatta, and the New Zealand Warriors, also represented Fiji in 13 international matches. The 34-year-old reflected on a difficult journey, revealing that he had long battled with addiction, suicidal thoughts, and homelessness following a business failure after his rugby career. “I had three goals in life: It was to play NRL, to buy my parents a house, and then I wanted to top myself,” he admitted during the interview.
Through the support of people like Joe Galuvao, a former player with ties to the Rugby League Players’ Association, Evans found the help he needed. He expressed gratitude for Galuvao’s intervention, which led him to rehab. “I thank God that he came and visited me and got me into rehab with the help of the RLPA,” Evans said, emphasizing the importance of community support during his struggles.
Before the interview aired, Evans had planned to come out to his family, stating, “I’ve been fighting a war within since I was about 15 years old and it's not sustainable.” He described the liberation he felt after sharing his truth, saying, “Now I’ve spoken about it, I’ve shattered all those chains. They’ve lost their power.”
Former rugby league player Ian Roberts praised Evans’ bravery, stating, “I was in tears watching. I am so proud of him.” Andrew Johns, a legendary figure in rugby league, echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of Evans’ revelation for others struggling with their sexuality. “To come out and tell the world, especially the rugby league world, it's incredibly strong,” Johns remarked, highlighting the positive impact Evans could have on young people facing similar challenges. “We all love you. Incredibly proud of you,” he added.
