Gavin Baker Shines at Regional Championships, Leads Shelby Whippets to State
PIQUA — In an impressive display of athleticism, Gavin Baker, a junior from Shelby, clinched the championship title in the Division III regional 110-meter hurdles. Competing with the goal of finishing in the top five to qualify for the state competition, Baker exceeded expectations by clocking in at 14.50 seconds, a full .31 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
Baker remarked on his preparation, stating, “The process going into today was just to get my snappiness down. I haven’t been very snappy during the postseason so that is something I am going to keep working on before next week.” His performance on Saturday, May 30, at Piqua High School may have been enhanced by an unconventional training session in the days leading up to the meet, which included a joint practice with Colonel Crawford to gain fresh insights from different coaching perspectives.
Baker acknowledged the contributions of his teammates, saying, “It has been so nice to see the process pay off. I would have loved to have repeated in the 4x100, but give Luke Blevins a ton of credit for stepping in and helping us qualify for state. He is an amazing team player and a talented freshman.” Baker, a returning All-Ohioan who finished sixth in the hurdles last year, aims to add two more All-Ohio accolades to his achievements.
He won’t be heading to Columbus alone; sophomore Clayton Mitchell qualified for state in the boys shot put after finishing third with a throw of 55-09.75, while senior Gavin Miller is set to compete in the boys high jump after securing fifth place with a personal best of 6-03. Both athletes will be making their state debut.
