Giants' Jung Hoo Lee Shines, Sparking Trade Speculation
San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, affectionately known as the "Grandson of the Wind," has made a significant impact since arriving in North America. However, his first two seasons in the MLB were less than stellar, as he struggled to find his footing, managing only 12 stolen bases in that time and failing to swipe any in his first 56 games this season.
Despite a rocky start for the Giants, who currently sit at 26-39, Lee's recent surge at the plate has turned heads. Prior to a career-high hitting streak, he was not viewed as a prime candidate for trade talks, with scouts focusing on potential free agents like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray. However, Lee's performance has generated new interest among opposing executives, particularly as he joins the ranks of Giants legends with his accumulating hits.
Over the past weekend, Lee showcased his skills by racking up 11 hits in just 15 at-bats during a series against the Colorado Rockies, extending his hitting streak to a personal best of 14 games. In Saturday's matchup against the Chicago Cubs, he further impressed with a 2-for-4 performance, bringing his season total to 19 multi-hit games, including four games with at least four hits.
As of Saturday, Lee stood with the second-most hits (22) in any nine-game stretch in Giants history, just behind Hall of Famer Willie Mays. The Giants' recent loss to the Cubs placed them 15.5 games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, prompting speculation that the team may aim to stockpile prospects ahead of the trade deadline.
Lee, a contact hitter, provides valuable outfield depth and is under team control through 2027, having signed a six-year, $113 million deal prior to the 2024 season. Given his recent offensive prowess, the "Grandson of the Wind" may soon find himself on the move, especially if his hitting continues to flourish as the trade deadline approaches.
