Gilgeous-Alexander Acknowledges Spurs' Supremacy as Thunder's Title Defense Comes to an End

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Following the conclusion of the season and the end of the Oklahoma City Thunder's title defense, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander offered a respectful nod to their opponents. The star guard, who has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player for two consecutive years, showcased his talents in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals but ultimately fell short against the San Antonio Spurs.

In the decisive game, Gilgeous-Alexander delivered an impressive performance, scoring 35 points with a series of dynamic plays, including mid-range shots and aggressive drives to the basket, even against the formidable 7-foot-4 center Victor Wembanyama. Despite his efforts, he acknowledged the challenges of repeating as champions. “So many things go into it,” he remarked, reflecting on the complexities of winning a title. “Sometimes it’s like things you can’t control, sometimes it’s things you can control. Yeah, it’s a hard task to do one time, so to do it twice will only make it even more challenging.”

The Thunder had worked diligently throughout the season to secure home-court advantage, finishing with a record of 64 wins compared to San Antonio's 62. However, the Spurs had previously dominated the Thunder in the regular season, winning four out of five matchups, and they continued their strong performance, winning four of the seven games in the Western Conference finals. Gilgeous-Alexander also noted the impact of injuries to teammates Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell during this critical series. “Not to make any excuses, but they’re a really good team over there,” he stated. “And losing Ajay and Dub the way we did in the midst of a series, you would think it would be a lot harder for us.”

Both the Thunder and Spurs appear to be positioned for sustained success in the coming years, hinting at a budding rivalry. “Yeah, they’re young, they're talented, well-coached,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of the Spurs. “They have the makeup, for sure. You don’t beat us without the makeup and they beat us. They have the makeup to go get one.”

Looking ahead, the Thunder face important decisions regarding their roster, as they hold multiple first-round draft picks that could be utilized to enhance their team or packaged for trades. While these choices lie ahead, Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his commitment to personal improvement, especially with aspirations of competing in World Cup qualifying this summer. “We just have to take it one day at a time from here on out,” he concluded. “Try to get better this summer, be a better team than we were this season — and try to get back over the hump.”
