Michael Vaughan suggests Hardik Pandya-KKR move in blockbuster Cameron Green trade idea

Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested an ambitious trade possibility ahead of IPL 2027. He suggests Hardik Pandya switching teams by leaving Mumbai Indians to play for Kolkata Knight Riders.

He believes Mumbai might have to bid farewell to the captaincy experiment with Hardik since their last year campaign was disappointing, and even suggested a deal wherein Cameron Green will be moved to Mumbai Indians for Hardik Pandya.

"Release [Hardik from MI and] replace him with Cameron Green," Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

The trade proposal has gained attention due to the past association of the two cricketers and their respective teams. Hardik rejoined Mumbai from Gujarat Titans in a controversial trade before the start of IPL 2024, whereas Cameron Green left the club after spending a few years with them and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

"I have seen enough. I didn't really see the dynamic of bringing him (Hardik) back. He was doing well with the Gujarat Titans, won a title there with a different set of players and a different coach. I feel Mumbai have got too many chefs in the kitchen," he added.

Hardik Pandya faces growing pressure after mixed results as Mumbai Indians captain

Hardik Pandya’s comeback to MI was seen as a move by the franchise preparing for life after its main man, Rohit Sharma. However, things have not been smooth sailing since then.

Hardik had a terrible start as team finished at the very bottom of the league table in IPL 2024. While Mumbai did seem to have found their feet in IPL 2025 where they reached Qualifier 2, IPL 2026 is again marred by inconsistencies and speculations about what is going on in the locker room.

With the team’s poor performance this season, including being among the first to be eliminated, chatter about Hardik has increased even further.

Overall, Hardik has captained Mumbai Indians in 44 matches, winning 20 and losing 24.

"If he (Hardik) wants to carry on as captain, then he'd better be with a fresh set of captains. Maybe KKR. Kolkata will be looking for a new captain. That is why the Green-Hardik swap," Vaughan explained.

The Cricket News Opinion: Does the Hardik Pandya-Cameron Green swap make sense for MI and KKR?

This tie-in between KKR becomes particularly fascinating since the franchise has already proven itself to be a big-time player in spending big money on the world-class all-rounder by bringing in Cameron Green before the start of IPL 2026 season.

The aggressive nature, leadership qualities, and all-round abilities of Hardik Pandya can be a fit for KKR ahead of IPL 2027 season as well.

However, the long-term prospects of Green can interest MI in terms of revamping their team with some new young faces. While such an exchange between both players proposed by Vaughan is purely hypothetical, there have been instances when big-ticket deals have taken place in IPL.

On the other hand, letting Hardik go will be a gamble of sorts for MI despite having three difficult seasons after taking over the mantle from the legendary Rohit Sharma.
