Harrison Golf Clinches Second Consecutive Sectional Title in Nail-Biting Finish
BATTLE GROUND — A pivotal decision by Harrison boys golf coach John Skelton has proven to be a game-changer for the Raiders as they secured their second consecutive sectional championship. Recognizing a dip in his team's morale, Skelton opted to give his players a break, allowing them much-needed time off to regain their confidence.
For the June 3 City/County golf tournament, Skelton fielded a team of one varsity and five junior varsity players, resulting in a third-place finish among seven teams. However, the true impact of this decision became evident during practice the following day. "The next day, they were happy again and they were hitting the ball better," said Skelton, noting that this year required a different approach compared to last year's rigorous training schedule.
This refreshed mindset yielded impressive results on Monday at Battle Ground Golf Club, where Harrison narrowly captured the sectional championship with a team score of 304, just one stroke ahead of McCutcheon at 305. The Raiders had previously been bested by the Mavericks three times in recent weeks but showcased their strength with four players scoring 79 or lower. "We've shot 295 this year," stated Harrison’s Isaac Wendt, who finished with a 74. "We know we're the best team in the field if we just shoot well, and that's what we did."
McCutcheon’s Phillip Ferger took home the sectional medalist title with a score of 72, while the Mavericks also had four players finish with scores of 79 or better. Despite the close competition, Harrison managed to maintain their slim lead throughout the nine holes, bolstered by Trevor Conn's matching 74 and a 77 from Ryan Towles, the only varsity player who participated in the earlier City/County meet. Eli Schooler rounded out the scoring with a 79. "I think it was just experience," Conn remarked. "We've got three seniors on the team and we just kind of knew how it works, the patience it takes to stay in it."
Harrison and McCutcheon will advance to Friday's regional competition at Coyote Crossing, joined by Central Catholic, which secured the final regional qualifying spot with Patrick Dimmitt's score of 75. The regional event is known for its high level of competition, presenting yet another challenge for the teams. "Even though we did this, there's still more to come and still more to achieve," Conn emphasized.
