Hurricanes Coach Keeps Goalkeeper Decision for Game 4 Under Wraps
Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour has made a choice regarding the starting goalie for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, scheduled for Tuesday, June 9. However, he remains tight-lipped about whether Frederik Andersen or Brandon Bussi will take the ice against the Vegas Golden Knights. "It's the only suspenseful thing around here that I have to hold onto," Brind'Amour stated during a press briefing on Monday, June 8. "It seems to have taken a life of its own, so I kind of enjoy it."
Andersen, who has been the starting goalie for all playoff matches thus far, did not participate in Monday’s practice, which Brind'Amour described as a maintenance day. The uncertainty surrounding the starting goalie stems from Brind'Amour’s decision to substitute Andersen for Bussi during the Hurricanes' Game 3 defeat, where the Golden Knights scored four goals against Andersen in the second period, including a hat trick by Mitch Marner.
Bussi entered the game at the start of the third period, making a strong impression by stopping 18 of 19 shots he faced during regulation and overtime, with only a flukey goal from Shea Theodore getting past him. This performance has led to speculation about whether Bussi should be the starter in Game 4.
Arguments in favor of Bussi include his impressive showing in his first game since mid-April and the fact that he successfully denied Marner on a penalty shot, helping the Hurricanes regain momentum. Conversely, Andersen has been a reliable force throughout the playoffs, excelling in the earlier rounds and rebounding after setbacks in the finals. While he has faced criticism for some goals allowed, including an own goal and defensive errors, Brind'Amour noted that Andersen is in good health following a slight head injury from a disallowed goal.
With two days off before the game, Brind'Amour believes that this break, along with Andersen's absence from practice, should provide enough recovery time for either goalie to perform at their best.
