Indiana All-Stars Bounce Back with Strong Win Against Kentucky
INDIANAPOLIS — Just under a day after enduring a heartbreaking loss to Kentucky, the Indiana All-Stars emerged victorious, defeating their rivals 90-71 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This win allowed Indiana to even the score in the annual Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Series.
Indiana took command during the second quarter, outscoring Kentucky 25-9 and establishing a significant 46-24 lead by halftime. The team displayed the energy, defensive prowess, and mutual trust that had been missing in their previous matchup. Indiana Miss Basketball Gracyn Gilliard remarked, “We just came out with a different type of intensity today. Our focus on the defensive end really pushed us.”
The All-Stars' defensive strategy was evident as they forced 24 turnovers, converting these into 28 points, while also dominating the boards with a 53-38 rebounding advantage. Butler-bound forward Laniah Wills emphasized the team’s approach, saying, “The plan was to have a bunch of energy, start it off, throw the first punch, don’t let them get started.”
After holding a slim 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, Indiana’s energy surged in the second, allowing them to pull away. Wills noted the excitement on the bench, saying, “We had energy on the bench, we were doing little chants and stuff.”
Indiana's scoring was well-distributed, with four players contributing at least 13 points. Gilliard, Wills, and Brooklynn Renn all scored 15 points, while Gilliard also pulled down eight rebounds. Renn, who is headed to Kansas, not only scored 15 points but also achieved a double-double with 11 rebounds, earning her the Hoosier Shooting Academy MVP award. Vanessa Rosswurm added 13 points to the total.
Renn highlighted the importance of Indiana's defense against Kentucky’s top players, including Ashlinn James, who was named Kentucky's Miss Basketball and will play for Indiana next season. “I think the lead that we gained early helped us a lot,” she said. “It’s not about them, it’s about us.”
This victory capped a week of collaboration among some of the state’s finest seniors, many of whom had previously competed against each other. Wills expressed her joy at being able to play with familiar faces, saying, “I’m happy that we got to get Kentucky finally.” Gilliard added that the relationships built during the week would be cherished. “It’s been a really fun experience,” she said. “It’s definitely an experience I’d recommend.”
