Indiana Fever Plummets in Rankings After Disappointing Losses and Caitlin Clark Controversy
The Indiana Fever entered the Chase Center on May 28 with a promising three-game winning streak but left with a crushing 90-88 defeat to the Golden State Valkyries. Caitlin Clark contributed with 16 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals, but her performance was marred by five turnovers and a lackluster shooting night, as she connected on just 3 of 12 attempts. A missed buzzer-beater by Aliyah Boston sealed the Fever's fate.
The situation worsened just two days later in a matchup against the expansion Portland Fire, where the Fever endured a significant 100-84 loss. Portland’s Megan Gustafson scored 22 points, while Carla Leite added 18 points and 12 assists. Clark played only 22 minutes, hitting just one of her seven shots and finishing with a season-low of six points, marking her first single-digit game since June 2025. Over these two games, she shot a dismal 4-for-19 from the field, the worst shooting stretch of her career.
With their record now at 4-4, the Fever's performance has sharply declined, contrasting with their earlier No. 3 ranking by ESPN. The latest ESPN WNBA Power Rankings reflect this drop, placing them at No. 11, while the Minnesota Lynx ascended to the top spot following a dominant 3-0 week. ESPN's Michael Voepel emphasized that Indiana needs to develop alternative defensive strategies and advised the team to maintain focus amid external distractions. “The spotlight on Clark never dims,” he noted, highlighting the challenges faced by star players.
The tension has not been limited to the court; during the loss to Portland, a heated exchange between Clark and head coach Stephanie White was caught on camera, further fueling speculation. After White substituted Clark for Raven Johnson, online commentators reacted strongly, suggesting underlying issues within the team. Analyst Jason Whitlock even suggested there was an intentional effort to undermine Clark's performance.
In response to the growing controversy, Clark affirmed her loyalty to White, stating, “I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. Steph has my back more than anybody.” White reciprocated the sentiment, expressing her strong relationship with Clark. Additionally, the Fever's recent decision to ban veteran beat reporter Scott Agness raised eyebrows regarding transparency within the organization. Facing mounting pressure, the Fever must quickly regroup as the Commissioner’s Cup begins, leveraging their talent to reclaim their competitive edge.
