Investigation into Stacey King's Cause of Death Continues Amid Outpouring of Tributes
CHICAGO — The passing of Stacey King, the beloved broadcaster and former Chicago Bulls player, has prompted an outpouring of condolences, but officials indicate that determining the cause of his death may take several weeks. King, who was 59, was declared dead shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at his residence in the 500 block of Bonnie Brae, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning, but the results remained pending as of that afternoon. A representative from the medical examiner's office confirmed that further testing is necessary to ascertain the exact cause of death, with results unlikely for weeks. River Forest Police Department Chief James Greenwood noted that the police are waiting for the autopsy findings before releasing additional information.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. King’s family,” Greenwood stated on Monday. “We are keeping the family in our thoughts during this difficult time.” King was a three-time NBA champion, recognized as the sixth overall pick in the 1989 draft by the Bulls, and played a pivotal role in the team's historic success during the 1990s.
Former teammates expressed their shock and sorrow at the news of King’s passing. Scottie Pippen praised him as “a great teammate and a true ambassador for the game,” while Michael Jordan shared, “I’m deeply saddened to learn of Stacey’s passing. We shared some special years together as teammates and he was part of a group that helped define an era of Chicago Bulls basketball.”
Although King was celebrated for his contributions on the court, his legacy as a broadcaster became integral to the Bulls community. Known for his vibrant personality and signature catchphrases, King became the Bulls' primary color commentator in 2008, bringing a lively energy to Bulls games for fans over the past two decades.
Colleagues remembered him fondly for his genuine enthusiasm and ability to connect with fans. “He just loved life,” said Neil Funk, King’s broadcasting partner. “He made every one of those people feel like he was the only person in the building. Unbelievable personality. They’re not going to make another Stacey King.”
In tribute to King, the Chicago Cubs held a moment of silence during their game against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night. The Chicago Sky also honored him during their broadcast, allowing broadcaster Lisa Byington to recall her experiences working alongside King. The Bulls organization plans to pay tribute to him during the 2026-27 season.
