Iowa Athletes Shine at NCAA Championships and Local Races

Iowa junior Luke Knepp has successfully qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, marking his first appearance at the prestigious event. Competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase quarterfinals at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 29, Knepp not only secured a spot but also broke his own school record with a remarkable fifth-place finish. He clocked in at 8 minutes, 30.52 seconds, earning him an automatic entry to the semifinals in Eugene, Oregon, set for June 10. The final race for the steeplechase is scheduled for June 12.

Last year, Knepp faced disappointment after finishing 18th overall, but he has shown significant improvement since then, achieving a personal best of 8:04.99 in the Big Ten Indoor Championships and securing a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten Outdoor 3,000 steeplechase in Lincoln, Nebraska, last month.

In contrast, Iowa State's redshirt senior Quinton Orr fell short of qualification for nationals, finishing 11th in Heat 3 with a time of 8:59.57. Iowa junior Hayden Kuhn also placed 11th in Heat 2, recording a time of 9:05.93. The standout performance in the steeplechase came from Iowa State sophomore Joash Ruto, who posted the fastest time of 8:26.87.

Arkansas senior Ainsley Erzen made it through to the quarterfinals of the 800-meter event but was unable to advance, finishing sixth in her heat with a time of 2:05.26. She had previously qualified for the quarterfinals with a third-place finish in her first round heat. Notably, the quickest time in the quarterfinals was achieved by Arkansas senior Sanu Jallow, who ran 1:57.74, just missing the NCAA record by a fraction of a second.

In local road racing news, Cody Baele from Des Moines captured victory in the half marathon at the 47th annual Dam to DSM race held on May 30, finishing with a time of 1:07:14. Baele, a three-time champion of the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon, outpaced Wartburg College sophomore Ayden Buchanan by over three minutes. Adam Bohach from Cresco secured third place and made history by moving into the top three for Iowa road racing times for men aged 40 to 49.
