Jacob Misiorowski’s Stellar May Performance Places Him in Rare MLB Company
In a noteworthy display of skill, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski faced a challenging situation during a game on Sunday. The bases were loaded with Houston Astros players: Jake Meyers on third, Jeremy Pena on second, and Yordan Alvarez on first after a hit-by-pitch. Misiorowski, who had only allowed one run in his previous five starts, was determined to keep the score tied as he confronted Christian Walker. On just his second pitch, a blazing 102-mph four-seam fastball, Walker grounded out to first, helping Misiorowski escape the jam.
In a tight matchup against Astros starter Tatsuya Imai, who was coming off a no-hitter, the Brewers' offense broke through in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Jake Bauers. Misiorowski, maintaining his consistency, pitched seven shutout innings, guiding the Brewers to a 2-0 victory at Daikin Park. With this performance, his record improved to 6-2, and he ended May having allowed only one earned run over 38.1 innings, achieving a remarkable feat in Major League Baseball history.
Misiorowski’s impressive month included 108 strikeouts while allowing just 13 earned runs and issuing 19 walks. This achievement made him the third pitcher ever to accumulate over 100 strikeouts while permitting fewer than 15 earned runs and 20 walks, joining the ranks of Pedro Martinez (2000) and Jacob deGrom (2021). Notably, in his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, Misiorowski became the first pitcher to throw 57 pitches at 100 mph or more in a single game, where he also recorded his only earned run of the month.
On Sunday, he continued to showcase his power, clocking 14 pitches over 100 mph in the first inning alone. While Misiorowski’s performance in May was nothing short of extraordinary, it did face some competition from Philadelphia Phillies’ Cristopher Sanchez, who boasted a 4-0 record and a perfect 0.00 ERA. As the season progresses, discussions surrounding the National League Cy Young Award are heating up.
