Jason Speer Steps Down as Boys Basketball Coach at Bloomington North
After dedicating numerous hours to coaching basketball, Jason Speer has announced his retirement as head coach of the boys basketball team at Bloomington North. Speer has been with the Cougars for 11 years, initially serving as the girls coach for two years before taking the helm of the boys team for the past nine years. In addition to his coaching role, he will also resign from his position as assistant athletic director but will continue to teach at the school.
“Jason did a great job in his nine years as the Bloomington North boys basketball head coach,” remarked Andy Hodson, the athletic director at North. “Our basketball program had some great success throughout his tenure, including two sectional and regional championships. We are extremely thankful for all that he did for BHSN basketball, athletics, and the North community. We wish him nothing but the best as he turns the page on an outstanding coaching career.”
Speer’s son, Rex, is currently a member of the North boys golf team and has recently been accepted into Notre Dame, where he will serve as a student manager for the men’s basketball program. “I am very grateful for the opportunities, relationships, and experiences that Indiana high school basketball has provided throughout my career,” Speer expressed in a press release. He also noted his eagerness to focus on teaching and spend more time with his family.
Taking over the boys program in 2017, Speer previously worked as an assistant coach alongside Hodson from 2001 to 2004. During his coaching career, he accumulated a record of 127-83 with the Cougars, securing sectional titles in 2022 and 2023. Both titles were won in thrilling overtime matches against Bloomington South and Center Grove, respectively.
“Coaching has been a tremendous gift in our lives,” Speer added. “And I am happy to pass that opportunity on to someone else. I hope it brings them as much joy and fulfillment as it has brought to our family.” The search for Speer’s successor will commence immediately, with assistant coaches stepping in to lead the team this summer. Bloomington North is set to return key players for the upcoming season, including seniors Derrick Cross and Levi Lindeman, along with starters Nate Walker and Tevin Bridgwaters.
