Joey Cantillo Struggles Persist as Guardians Fall to Rangers

The Cleveland Guardians have consistently relied on their pitching staff, but recent performances from some of their pitchers reveal vulnerabilities. One pitcher facing challenges is Joey Cantillo, whose difficulties continued during the Guardians’ 10-0 defeat to the Texas Rangers on Sunday. In his outing, Cantillo managed to pitch 5.0 innings, yet he surrendered nine hits, allowed seven earned runs, and issued two walks. On a positive note, he did strike out seven batters.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt noted that Cantillo's issues stemmed from simply being hit hard. “He left some pitches over the middle. I thought the first few innings had the best strike quality and throwing we've seen from him in a while, but he got hurt on a couple of tough pitches that he left out over,” Vogt remarked. “He just wasn't able to really regroup.”

While a rough outing from time to time is to be expected, Cantillo's struggles have now spanned three consecutive games. Prior to facing Texas, he had two challenging starts against the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals, yielding a total of eight earned runs over six innings, which has raised his season ERA to 4.57. His command has become a significant concern, as he walked seven batters in his previous two starts and struggled to keep pitches out of the hitting zone against the Rangers.

Despite the ongoing issues, both Cantillo and the Guardians remain optimistic. "I think it's been three pretty shaky starts in a row," Vogt stated. "Joey's a hard worker. I know he's gonna dive in with a pitching group, and we're gonna try and find some answers… because when he's consistent, we've seen what he can do.” Cantillo himself expressed a more positive outlook on his recent performance, stating, "I'd take today's start over the last three starts," acknowledging that while the results were disappointing, he felt he was attacking hitters more effectively.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether this newfound approach will translate into improvement for Cantillo in his upcoming appearances.
