Kate Martin Approaches Key Decision Point in Developmental Contract with Sparks
Kate Martin has reached the midpoint of her developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks, with only five games remaining before the team must decide on her future. Under the terms of her contract, developmental players are allowed to participate in up to 12 games, after which they can either be signed to a full-time roster or released.
During her seventh appearance with the Sparks on Sunday against the Portland Fire, Martin contributed five points and secured one rebound. Over the course of her seven games this season, she has averaged three points, 0.3 rebounds, and 0.2 assists, demonstrating her potential in limited playing time.
Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts praised Martin's contribution, referring to her as a “spark off the bench” and highlighting the trust her teammates have in her abilities. However, Roberts acknowledged the challenges that come with having developmental players, noting the inconsistency in availability can hinder team cohesion.
Prior to joining the Sparks, Martin was waived by the Golden State Valkyries on May 7. She remains focused on what she can control, emphasizing her commitment to being a dedicated teammate. “I literally cannot do a single thing about that,” she stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Daily News. “So all I can do is show up and work my butt off and have a good attitude about it and cheer for my teammates.”
As she navigates this critical juncture in her career, Martin is determined to make a positive impact on her team, leaving roster decisions to those in charge while maintaining her focus on hard work and teamwork.
