Kenton Ridge Captures Back-to-Back State Softball Titles with Dramatic Comeback
Kenton Ridge High School's softball team clinched its second consecutive OHSAA Division IV state championship on Sunday, June 7, defeating Newark Licking Valley 7-6. The Cougars showcased remarkable resilience, overcoming a 6-0 deficit after just two and a half innings to achieve a thrilling victory.
This championship marks a significant milestone for the Cougars, as it is only the second title in the school's history. With this win, Kenton Ridge has extended its winning streak to an impressive 64 games, making it only the second team in Ohio to finish back-to-back seasons undefeated.
Key to the comeback was Jayden Davis, who went 3 for 4 at the plate, contributing three RBIs, including a crucial two-run hit in the sixth inning that gave Kenton Ridge its first lead of the game. Teammates Ivee Rastatter and Kendall Glass also had standout performances, each recording two hits during the match.
As the game progressed, the Cougars found themselves needing to rally in the sixth inning. After Chloe Glass and Lily Foulk reached base, Emory Whisner, the Licking Valley pitcher, was brought back in to face Kenton Ridge's top hitters. Davis capitalized on the moment, hitting a pivotal base hit that turned the tide for the Cougars.
Before their comeback, Kenton Ridge had been struggling, with Licking Valley holding a 6-5 lead heading into the final innings. Despite the challenges, the determination of the Cougars shone through, as they fought back to secure the championship in an exhilarating finish.
