Lakers Urged to Consider Promising 3-and-D Player Ochai Agbaji

The Los Angeles Lakers are in need of a two-way wing to enhance their roster and elevate their chances of contending for a championship. With several current free agents expected to return on new contracts, the team might have to explore cost-effective options to fill essential roles.

Ochai Agbaji, a 26-year-old 6-foot-5 forward currently with the Brooklyn Nets, has demonstrated potential throughout his four-year NBA career, although he has yet to fully realize it. Maxwell Ogden from Lake Show Life has put forth the idea that the Lakers should take a chance on Agbaji, suggesting they could help him regain his value while it remains low. "As the Los Angeles Lakers search for low-cost talent to bolster their rotation via free agency, Ochai Agbaji should be a priority signing as a player with a believable shot at redemption," Ogden stated.

In the 2024-25 season, Agbaji recorded averages of 10.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while showcasing impressive shooting efficiency at .498/.399/.708 over 27.2 minutes. However, his performance dipped significantly in the following season, where he averaged just 5.1 points and shot poorly at .436/.266/.837 in 15.7 minutes of play.

This decline in production may limit Agbaji's market value, potentially leading to short-term contract offers as he heads into restricted free agency. The Lakers are encouraged to negotiate for at least a one-year deal, possibly with a second-year club option. Despite his inconsistency, Agbaji possesses the skills to become the 3-and-D wing that the Lakers are in dire need of.

Originally selected as the 14th pick in the 2022 draft, Agbaji was highly regarded for his athleticism and defensive capabilities coming out of the University of Kansas. While his offensive struggles have been notable, he has maintained a strong defensive presence, ranking in the 83rd percentile for perimeter isolation defense, according to Basketball Index.
