Lely High School's Carter Quinn Set for Football Comeback After Overcoming Leukemia

Carter Quinn, a former quarterback for Lely High School, is preparing to return to the football field after a challenging battle with leukemia. On June 1, he shared the exciting news via social media that the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has granted him a fifth year of eligibility, allowing him to play this fall after missing the entire 2025 season due to his illness.

"There was definitely a big period where I didn't think I'd ever play football again," Quinn reflected on his journey. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the sport he loves. After reclassifying to the 2027 graduating class, he will now play for St. John Neumann High School.

The approval for Quinn's eligibility came after an 18-month ordeal that turned his senior year upside down. The Quinn family sought an undue hardship waiver under FHSAA Bylaw 10.4.4, which permits additional eligibility for students who miss significant time due to serious health issues. "I was really happy," Quinn recalled after receiving the waiver in April. "It was a relief because I knew I could get my life back on track."

The support from the local football community played a crucial role in Quinn's journey. Former Naples head coach Bill Kramer, Lely administrators, and even City of Naples police chief Sean Phillips were instrumental in navigating the appeals process. The family eagerly awaited the FHSAA's decision, which came swiftly after a Zoom hearing.

For Quinn, the waiver signifies much more than merely an extra season of football. During his treatment, the prospect of returning to the game served as a significant motivation. "It just gave him something to look forward to," said his father, Steve Quinn. Even while sidelined, Carter remained active within the Trojans' program, helping coaches and mentoring younger players, contributing to the team’s success in capturing a district championship.

As he prepares for his comeback, Quinn has been focused on regaining his physical strength. Having lost weight during treatment, he has worked diligently with trainers to rebuild his body, now weighing nearly 180 pounds. "Any obstacle thrown at me, I know I can get through," Quinn stated, emphasizing his resilience.

Before his diagnosis, Quinn was among the top quarterbacks in Southwest Florida, leading Lely to a district championship in 2024. The experience has shifted his perspective on the game. "You're not taking anything for granted," he said. As he approaches his return, Quinn is ready to embrace the challenge ahead, eager to once again compete on the field.
